It's TIME FOR CHANGE after eight years of the Conservatives being responsible for the safety of our communities.
Cllr Richard Dickson, who currently works part-time at Coventry University's Peace & Security Centre, is standing to be the next Warwickshire Police & Crime Commissioner. His offer is to help bring more Accountability, Community Engagement and Transparency to the hard work that our police already do to help keep our communities safe. I'm offering experience serving local residents, both as a local councillor and in the local voluntary and community sector.
Also through my work at Coventry University’s Peace and Security Centre, I'm very aware of the serious and diverse security challenges facing both urban and rural communities.
1) More community policing - residents tell me tackling fear of crime is as important as reducing actual levels of criminality. More community policing gives residents assurance that law enforcement will be responsive when needed.
2) More openness and engagement by the Commissioner's office - the reality is that Warwickshire Police is one of the smallest forces in the country, so there’s a need for more openness and engagement by the Commissioner with residents about the force’s achievements against a set of key performance indicators.
3) Closer working by the Commissioner’s office with other public sector bodies and community groups in all parts of the county, who also do great work to help make our communities safe.
I get that many people are not fans of the concept of Police and Crime Commissioners, especially with their multi-million pound budget. The Conservatives have also changed the way the Commissioners are elected, getting rid of the much fairer proportional representation method and replacing it with the old-fashioned first-past-the-post system. But the role is here to stay for the foreseeable future, so let’s get the Commissioner’s job done as effectively and as transparently as possible.
If elected, I’ll work with the Chief Constable and her teams to increase community policing to help make our communities as safe as possible for everyone, and to deliver better value for money for taxpayers.
